Rekey Vs Replace

We get calls daily from people needing their locks changed because a key was given to or taken by someone who shouldn’t have it. The first thing we’ll ask you is if you want them rekeyed or replaced. Replacing the hardware is pretty self explanatory, but what is rekeying? Per the Associated Locksmiths Of America the definition of rekey is ‘to change the existing combination of a cylinder or lock’. In other words, rekeying is changing the locks to work on a new key instead of the original key.

So when should you rekey? When should you replace? It depends on the hardware. Full disclosure, you can buy cheap locks on Amazon that cost less than having a locksmith rekey. But do you want the cheapest locks when someone might be trying to get into your property? Plus, these cheap locks often aren’t designed to be taken apart, meaning we can’t rekey them and you’ll have to replace them again. If you have decent locks that are in good, working condition it’s probably better to simply rekey them. If your locks are old and worn out you may want them replaced. If it’s a commercial property rekeying is always less expensive than replacing hardware, though we may advise replacement if the hardware is in poor condition. Timeliness is another thing to consider. Usually we can rekey a house or small commercial property same or next day. We keep most common locks in stock, but if we’ve used them recently or if you want something high end it may take a few days for us to order hardware.

If you’re handy and want to save some money you’re welcome to remove the locks and bring them to our shop. You can also buy your own and have them rekeyed if they aren’t all on the same key- unless they’re cheap locks not meant to be taken apart. We charge a slightly discounted rate for rekeys in the shop and you avoid the trip charge. But, you’re missing out on some of the value we include if we come out to the property. We include basic door adjustments and lock service with our onsite rekey rate. We’ll spend a few minutes on each door to make sure your locks are working correctly and smoothly, because rekeying doesn’t do you any good if the locks don’t work! Ultimately it’s your choice; we’ll gladly quote you the trip charge, cost of new hardware, and our per cylinder (each individual keyhole) rekey rate so you can make an informed decision.
